2014: Our Fearful Fascination with “the Other”
This year’s symposium is themed “Our Fearful Fascination with the Other.” Othering is a concept rooted in a rich philosophical tradition that refers to the process by which we make something foreign or alien based on its divergence from our familiarity with it. Through conceptualizing an entity as “the Other,” we transform someone from a subject to an object of our interactions and, in doing so, othering becomes a form of oppression and serves possibly as a way to subsume or fetishize our fears into something a bit more manageable. Othering is something we often engage in subconsciously. Scary movies and fearsome creatures, like zombies, often represent the fetishization of our fears and specifically our fear of others. In this conference, we will explore how our internal and societal values conflict with conceptualizing and engaging with “the Other” through an exploration of representations of monsters and the zombie
Charles Darwin’s family for three generations were at the center of the anti-slave movement. Charles Darwin was the first to offer scientific evidence that all humans are biologically in the same species, and against the racists claiming otherwise. It makes this FB page appear ignorant, or even stupid to argue against obvious facts.Charles Darwin, wrote in The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex (John Murray, London, 1871), “It may be doubted whether any character can be named which is distinctive of a race and is constant.”Note that this is at a time when many Christians argued that non-Europeans were not even human! The American slave owners were assured by the “preAdamites” that God had created the Negro with the “beasts of the field” and that the sons of Adam (of course all Whites) was only exercising his God ordained right to dominate these sub-humans.The real claims that the African people were inferior, and even “subhuman” was from the so-called Christians in the slave states. For example, The Rev. John Bachman (February 4, 1790 – February 24, 1874) was an American Lutheran minister, social activist and naturalist who collaborated with J.J. Audubon, author of “Unity of the Human Race,” Co-founder of Newberry College, and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. Bachman published in 1850 “The Doctrine of the Unity of the Human Race Examined on the Principles of Science,” and in 1855 “Characteristics of Genera and Species, as Applicable to the Doctrine of Unity in the Human Race.” Bachman was liberal of his place and time. He accepted that the African, and Caucasian races were of the same species. However, he also wrote that the African were of such an inferior, and debased nature that it was the Christian Duty of Whites to enslave the Africans “for their own good.”For more examples see;Daly, John Patrick2002 “When Slavery was Called Freedom: Evangelicalism, Proslavery, and the Causes of the Civil War” University of Kentucky Press. For some facts about Darwin, and human evolution see;Desmond, Adrian and James More2009 “Darwin’s Sacred Cause” New York: Penguin Books
Responding to Gary Hurd:
Mr. Hurd, you seem to be Cherry-picking history to support your argument, If you read my Amazon book, “Beast: The Deconstruction of Charles Sonny Liston”, I speak extensively about Darwin. He is a character in my book. You have two books that you have used for your source material. If you are a true researcher, you would need to “Cross-reference to another text or part of a text, typically given in order to elaborate on a point”. You have only referenced two books. It would be a waste of my time, to discuss this subject matter any further. Because of your limited knowledge. You would be knocked out in the first round. I have studied anthropology in college as a Communications major. THE ORIGIN of SPECIES is a book I used as a reference for my book. Mr. Hurd, you speak of Darwin but not Andrew Knight, Professor Weismann, Kolreuter, Isidore Geoffroy St. Hilaire’s, Tait, Wyman, Lucas, that tells me that you are here to attack, and you’re not here to add to the conversation. Because you have not studied the subject matter enough to know that Darwin’s findings incorporated, the work of these men and many others not mentioned here. Do you have Darwin’s books? The fact that you don’t understand how the works of these men, led to the idea of race variation, tells me that you may have read Darwin’s work, but you don’t understand it. “Darwin was, after all, a man of his time, class, and society. True, he was committed to a monogenic, rather than the prevailing polygenic, view of human origins, but he still divided humanity into distinct races according to differences in skin, eye, or hair color. He was also convinced that evolution was progressive and that the white races—especially the Europeans—were evolutionarily more advanced than the black races, thus establishing race differences and a racial hierarchy”.

Dear Mrs. Presley, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Lynel Gardner and I represent the Sonny Liston family. I’m writing to you because I would like to express my gratitude for you and your board’s willingness to come together on behalf of the Sonny Liston and Mr. Ali photograph. As the Grandson of Geraldine and Sonny Liston, I have inherited not only their legacy but also the responsibility to fulfill their wishes and aspirations. It is thanks to Muhammad Ali Enterprises, that I was able to find Harlan Werner and Sports Placement Services.
My grandmother’s dying wish was to present the love of her life, Charles “Sonny” Liston in a positive light. My grandmother lived in abject poverty, unaware of the many people all over the world who were making money off of Sonny’s good name. It had gotten so bad for her, that she eventually had to do the unthinkable; and that was to sell Sonny’s championship belt which was the last of the Queensberry mold for a meager $10,000. A belt that at the time, had a market value of $70,000. It is thanks to people like Harlan Werner, that she was able to hold her head up high again. And bring back dignity to the Liston name.
Before she died, she was helping to write the movie “NIGHT TRAIN”. A movie that would finally tell my grandfather’s story, from her perspective. I wish you could have seen the light in her eyes, knowing that she could finally be allowed to tell the truth, about Sonny’s life. She was hoping that the proceeds from the movie, would generate enough income so that her grandchildren would not have to suffer the same fate that had befallen her. And that was to live in poverty and be considered a lower class citizens.
Unfortunately, she died before her dream could be fulfilled. And for some reason or another, her name is no longer on the NIGHT TRAIN script. I feel it is my duty to fulfill my grandmother’s dying wish. And that is to insure that her grandchildren, will be able to become financially secure. And to make sure that my grandfather, is seen in a positive light. And most importantly, to finally bring dignity back to the Liston name. I have taken on the responsibility to protect their memory, and have been doing that for the past six years.
I’m sure you understand what I’m talking about, seeing that you have chosen to sit on the board. Sonny Liston gave to the poor, helped wayward children, and supported Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. I would like to continue his legacy on behalf of the Liston name. I would like to start a not-for-profit organization for wayward children, and the poor. Make sure her grandchildren are financially secure, get his championship belt back, and tell Sonny’s story in a manner that would make my grandmother proud.
I trust that the offer that Mr. Werner presented to you is fair and just. He is well respected in the industry, and he continues to protect the Liston family with the same zeal that he protected my grandmother. I only ask that you reconsider his offer on behalf of the memory of Sonny and Geraldine Liston. And on behalf of the friendship, they both shared with Mr. Ali and the Ali family.
